This week, the Salt Lake City Fire Department has been conducting a Water Rescue class involving 12 of its firefighters. The final day of training will take place on Friday, June 15, on the Jordan River and surplus canal. At 8 a.m. on Friday, course instructors will have a vehicle submerged in the water. At approximately 9 a.m., firefighters will train on extricating a mannequin from the vehicle. The vehicle has been pressure-washed and all the fluids have been drained from the vehicle. The engine and fuel tank have also been removed in order to not affect the environment. At 2 p.m., instructors plan on having the firefighters conduct different types of rescues using complex rope and boat systems. These situations prepare the firefighters for rescuing trapped kayakers, swimmers and anyone in the water needing help. Members of the media are invited to attend the training. |
